I called into Town Hall Bookshop on the Florence Road in Bray recently and picked up a copy of “Pictorial Memories of Bray – Volume 3”. I had seen on the internet that it contained a section of 23 pages on “The FCA in Bray” and so I decided to have a look. The editor is Henry Cairns and Henry himself was manning the shop when I called in. I made the mistake of first asking for “The Pictorial History of Bray – Volume 3” which is a different publication altogether, but Henry put me right! One collection is produced by Bray Cualann Historical Society, of which ex-21Bn member Jim Scannell is the PRO, and the other by The Old Bray Society. Henry Cairns is also an ex-member of 21Bn.
The shop sells second-hand books and local history publications. Henry tells me he always has demand for military history books and so I must call in every so often to see what he has in stock.
The article on the FCA in Bray is based around Jim Scannell’s text, and photos from Bunny McAuley, although the pictures are only in black and white. There is a nice full page tribute to Bunny as part of the article. I recommend that A Coy personnel should call in and have a look through the book and support Henry’s efforts by purchasing a copy if it contains pictures they might want. It is priced at 20 euro.
I am including a photo here by way of an appetiser as it portrays an old Bray institution that sadly is no more. No, not A Coy, but Lenihan’s. The picture is noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly it shows a picture of John Hynes, who looks as though he has just celebrated his confirmation. Secondly, the caption proves that Terry Shortt can be identified just by the back of his head!
